S2 Ep34: Understanding the Role of an Editor - with Jessica Brown

Season #2 Episode #34

Have you ever wondered what an editor actually does? Do you worry about sending your book for editorial review? Are you unsure as to which editor to work with? All perfectly normal things to ask about the editorial process. That’s why I’m delighted to welcome this week’s guest to the podcast - my editor, Jessica Brown.

Jessica is an experienced non-fiction editor - having worked on over 100 titles across a range of genres. From first-hand experience, I can tell you that she’s brilliant at what she does!

During our wonderful conversation, we chat about:

  • What an editor actually does - and the three core types of editor you’re likely to encounter on your book writing journey, how they’ll help you at the different stages and which ones are non-negotiable if you’re on a budget!
  • What to expect when working with an editor and how to cope when getting editorial feedback on your writing - especially if you don’t agree with them! We also cover what you should look for in an editorial report to get the best experience for you and your book.
  • Finding a reputable editor - how can you find someone with the experience and credentials to edit your book to a high standard? Do you need to have your book edited before approaching a traditional publisher?

And loads more - it’s such a valuable conversation!

Jess’s true passion is supporting self-publishing authors to publish business-building books through a truly collaborative approach to the editing process - and I’m sure you’ll hear that in today’s episode! She’s one of the best editors I’ve ever worked with on my books.

I hope our conversation gives you the confidence and knowledge to pursue a brilliant relationship with your own editor - writing a professional, high-class book really is a team effort, so finding an editor who really ‘gets’ your work is a must.

I hope you enjoy listening!
